Tibetan Buddhist teachers have a simple yet powerful teaching to open us to who we really are. It may be seen as the teaching of Little Mind-Big Mind; or in Tibetan, Sem Chungchung-Sem Chenpo . Little mind is everyday-mind for most of us - ranging from simple planning, coping, anxiety about minor or major things, escalating to self-preoccupation, self-contraction and narrowness.

Little-mind living results in spending a good portion of our time disconnected from who we really are, not acknowledging our inherent Buddha-nature. And at the end of a day of doing all that needs to be done, marked by moments of anxiety, impatience, anger and aggression, we feel exhausted or empty. As one teacher put it, "Our day job has changed from practising our enlightened qualities to covering them up."

Big mind, on the other hand, acknowledges and appreciates its own capacity for enlightenment. It is characterised by having confidence in our inherent joy, wisdom and compassion. Small mind deserves small attention; big mind deserves big attention. However, most of us end up doing just the reverse! If we do not trust in our own natural greatness, we can't easily recognise it in others.

Interestingly, psychologist Richard Alpert, better known as Ram Dass, laid out what he sees as the difference between the western psychological tradition and the Hindu/Buddhist model of mind.
If we experience our lives as if confined to a prison cell made up of the concepts of society, culture, family and personal experience that condition us, we may find it hard to see a way out. Perhaps some have orderly, comfortable cells, while some have messed up, cluttered cells. We name these states of relative order or disorder, being 'mentally well' or 'mentally ill'.

Most of western psychology, he says, acts like a kind of caretaker that comes in and tidies up the place, giving it better order and cleanliness; we remain, however, locked inside the cell. This, while it works in some sense, he considers the psychology of the ego, or what Buddhism calls the little-mind approach. Hindu or Buddhist psychology, through not only inter-ventions, but by including methods of mindfulness and meditation, shows the way to the door that leads us out of the cell - into the world of expansive potentiality, into what Buddhism calls Big Mind.

A story is told of one of Tibet's great female yogis, Machig Lobdron, who perplexingly used to cry one minute and laugh the next.

When someone asked her why she acted that way, she replied, "I laugh with delight because enlightenment always lies right below the surface of life, right in front of our nose. This is truly a joyous and wondrous discovery. I cry because beings are anxious, in pain, and depressed, when our enlightened qualities are so nearby, yet so covered up."

Living out of big mind does not require us not to give up everyday concerns - that would be too unrealistic - but to place them firmly in perspective. And this cannot happen without some slowing down and reflection. Then, we will need to make time and space for attention to big mind; and see how little mind will slip into second place - MARGUERITE THEOPHIL
